Most Popular Lunchtime Enlightenment

Each work-day (that's Monday to Friday) I post a 'Lunchtime Enlightenment' tip on the Quiet Mind Meditation Facebook Page - you can also sign up for our email version HERE - these tips are designed to provide a little motivation and inspiration for taking a few moments (or minutes) during your lunch break for a gentle daily mindfulness practice.

Each Saturday I am posting the most popular Lunchtime Enlightenment tip from the past week .. drum roll please ..

Lunchtime Enlightenment #65

"Shifting our awareness to the sense of touch can be a powerful mindfulness practice that brings instant calm to a busy and distracted mind. Find some beautiful hand lotion that you can use for our hand massage exercise.

Start by removing any rings or bracelets. Open and close your hands a few times to get the blood flowing and to loosen tendons and ligaments. Notice how good it feels to really stretch and wriggle your fingers and thumbs. When ready, open your lotion and close your eyes for a moment so you can really investigate the ‘smell’ .. what scent do you notice?

Apply a small amount of the lotion to the palm of your hand and warm by gently rubbing your hands together. Pay special attention to your knuckles and any dry areas, exploring the texture of the lotion, and any areas of the coolness/ warmth/slipperiness or stickiness. Massage each finger, using small circular movements and include the webbing between fingers, paying attention to the cuticles of each nail and being careful of tender or sore spots.

Allow yourself the time to simply enjoy the sense of touch, sight and smell involved in this practice. Finish by stroking the top of the hand from knuckle to wrist, before resting and allowing the hand lotion to soak into the skin.

Did you know the human hand consists of 27 different bones?".

Lunchtime Enlightenment #62

"What is a well known stress-reliever, that reduces negative energy, produces a sense of well-being, lowers cortisol (your 'stress' hormone), helps you lose weight, relieves pain and stops the ‘noise’ in your mind?

Um. Kissing.

It is said, that the endorphins produced by kissing are 200 times more powerful than morphine, and the saliva secreted holds a natural antibiotic that helps relieve pain, while increasing levels of oxytocins an extremely calming hormone that produces a feeling of peace. The benefits of kissing have been shown to have similar benefits to meditation". ~ Sarah, Quiet Mind Meditation

Lunchtime Enlightenment #55

Heard of the Slow Movement?

When life becomes too busy and you start to feel overwhelmed with 'to do's' the slow movement philosophy recommends that you start embracing slow living to restore balance.

Mindfully paying attention with purpose to the task at hand, try slowing down whatever you are doing by half .. whether this is surfing the internet, sweeping the leaves, hanging the washing or thinking on a work project. By deliberately changing your pace so that it feels like you are moving in slow motion, you can dramatically reduce stress and tension.

Try regular 5 minute periods of s-l-o-w-i-n-g  d-o-w-n.

See how slow you really can go!

Lunchtime Enlightenment #51

Poetry and the written word are both ancient tools for mindfulness practice. To fully experience the beauty of poetry, we must stop whatever else we are doing and give our full attention .. which opens us to a deeper connection and understanding of the world around and within us.

Poetry has the capacity to capture moments of deep thought, emotion and insight - allowing us to shift mindfully into the present moment with a higher degree of awareness.

'‘Your attitude to me, says the Breath, is your attitude to Life. Welcome me… embrace me fully. Let me nourish you completely, then set me free. Move with me, dance with me, sing with me, sigh with me… Love me. Trust me. Don’t try to control me. (The Breath is Life’s Teacher by Donna Martin).

Lunchtime Enlightenment Tip: Chewing Gum

Each work-day (that's Monday to Friday) I share a 'Lunchtime Enlightenment' post on the Quiet Mind Meditation Facebook Page - you can also sign up for our email version HERE - designed to provide a little motivation and inspiration for taking a few moments (or minutes) during your lunch break for a gentle daily mindfulness practice.

Life is busy. We are all busy. But taking just a few moments to PAUSE and BREATHE can be empowering and life changing.

Today's tip : “Recent research suggests that chewing gum may improve aspects of cognitive function and mood, while also reducing stress.  Gum chewing is an age-old practice with the ancient Greeks, Mayans and Native Americans all chewing on tree resin.

The act of continuous chewing or moving of our jaw activates the area of our brain that is important for memory, while increasing blood flow to the brain which can enhance our cognitive powers.  The act of chewing also speeds up our heartbeat and blood pressure just enough to wake up both left-and right hemispheres of the brain to work better together.

When anxious we often clench our jaw and grind our teeth, but the repetitive activity of chewing can assist with loosening the hold of body-mind tension.

Just be sure to stick with sugar-free gum, which contains fewer calories and sugar. Sugar-free gum has also been shown in studies to help clean teeth, reduce cavities and improve bad breath".

Today's Lunchtime Enlightenment #25

“Tea time. Research has shown that daily cups of tea can speed up recovery from the daily stresses of life, and black tea has been shown to lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

The ancient ritual of brewing and drinking tea is also a beautiful way to practice mindfulness as we consciously pause during a busy day and shift our awareness to our senses .. smell, taste and touch.

Nurture yourself today by enjoying a lovingly prepare cup of tea, in your favourite cup, by the window, in peace."

Lunchtime Enlightenment

Each work day I share a 'Lunchtime Enlightenment' post on the Quiet Mind Meditation FB page to motivate and inspire you to take a few moments (or minutes) during your lunch break for a gentle daily mindfulness practice.

Life is busy. We are all busy. But taking just a few moments to PAUSE and BREATHE can be empowering and life changing.

Today's tip : “It has been proven in clinical studies that 2 hours of nature sounds a day can significantly reduce stress hormones - by up to 800% and activate 500-600 DNA segments responsible for healing and repairing the body. During lunchtime today try to get outside and lie on the grass. Expose as much of your skin as possible to the earth, look up at the clouds, listen to nature around you and take long slow breaths. ~ Sarah, Quiet Mind Meditation
