Focus On: Cynthia Kane

Dominique Fierro Photography + Design
The Focus On series is all about sharing the diversity of meditation journeys and experiences. An opportunity to come together and share stories, practices and insights .. to listen and learn from each other.

I met Cynthia recently at a meditation retreat.  Seated together at a group lunch .. I learnt that Cynthia had written for Huffington Post and Elephant Journal (wow) AND that she had recently written a book - How To Communicate Like A Buddhist.

I immediately asked Cynthia if she might share her practice, and her book, with the Quiet Mind community. So I am delighted to introduce you to Cynthia Kane, author and book editor who coaches authors for publication and a literary agent. She is also a certified meditation and mindfulness instructor.

Name: Cynthia Kane
Special Interest: Mindful Communication
Website: http://www.cynthiakane.com

1.Tell us about your special Interest
I used to be a horrible communicator. I rarely said what I meant and was very passive aggressive. Most of my interactions looked like me blaming everyone else for what wasn’t going good in my life and feeling like no matter what I said or did I wasn’t enough. My days ended with me feeling exhausted and most all of the time completely misunderstood.

While I wanted to be open with others and express myself clearly, or be able to share in others happiness I was doing the opposite. I was stuck in a way of communicating that kept me rooted in separateness, feeling isolated, fearful, and insecure.

And then, unexpectedly, my first love passed away. It was at this time I realized that my life and my enjoyment were 100% my responsibility. If I wanted to come home at the end of the day and feel alive, joyful, and excited about life then I needed to find another way to communicate with it.

Communication is essential to being human, and when you become better at it, your personal truth becomes clearer, your relationships improve, and the result is that you experience more peace and harmony in your life.

My new book, How To Communicate Like a Buddhist, came directly out of this quest to find a new way to communicate with myself, others, and in turn the world.

I’ve taken the four elements of right speech in Buddhism and developed them into a modern practice based on mindful listening, mindful speech, and mindful silence.

The book takes you through my own five-step practice that is designed to help you:

1. Listen to yourself (your internal and external words)
2. Listen to others
3. Speak consciously, concisely, and clearly
4. Regard silence as a part of speech
5. Meditate to enhance your communication skills

If you have ever felt misheard, have trouble stating how you feel, or long to have more meaningful and genuine conversations, this book can help. The simple steps outlined in this book will have a huge effect on how you communicate with others and yourself.

2. How long have you been practicing, or working in this area? Tell us about your ‘journey’
I’ve been practicing a mix of mindful, nonviolent, and what I call self responsible communication for over five years now. What I’ve found is that it’s a life practice. It’s constantly noticing our automatic communication habits or patterns and refocusing on the present moment to choose a more kind, honest, and helpful response.

3. How did you find meditation, and how long have you been practicing meditation?
I’ve been practicing meditation for over five years and I believe that meditation is the glue to speaking in a more honest, kind, and helpful way.

After my first love passed away a friend of mine sent me an email about a meditation and writing workshop at the Shambhalah Center in New York. I had no idea what meditation was, but I knew that a weekend of writing would be good for me. I went and learned to meditate that first night. Directly afterward I wrote in my journal that this was something I wanted to incorporate into my life, make it a daily practice. Why? Because ..

..it let me be as I was..

There was no judgement from myself for the first time, just a gentle attention. I could feel all that I was feeling, finally allowing myself to be, no pushing to be someone better, no forcing to be more. Meditation has let me get to know who I am, helped me to respect who I am, and showed me how to live inline with who I am.

4. Do you have a regular practice – daily, weekly, other?
I practice everyday for 20 minutes in the morning after I wake up and then again around 5:30 p.m.

5. What inspires you to keep meditating .. returning to your practice?
I keep meditating because it takes care of me. It helps me love instead of critique, respond instead of react, express instead of hide. I come back again and again because how I am in meditation is how I want to live my life: focused, present, and accepting.

6. Why do you meditate?
I meditate because it helps me live in a way that’s kind, honest, free of judgment, and helpful.

7. Do you have a particular technique(s) that you have found most suitable for you?
I do a lot of breath awareness meditation; however, I will prescribe myself certain meditations if I’m feeling a certain way. If I’m feeling closed and judgmental I’ll do a loving-kindness meditation for a whole week. If I’m having a hard time letting go of a situation I’ll do a forgiveness meditation.

8. AM or PM? ..  Chair, cushion, stool?
I meditate in the morning and the early evening. I use a cushion.

9. Have you a dedicated space for your practice?  Where do you meditate?
I put my cushion down in my bedroom and that’s it. Sometimes, on the weekends, I’ll wake up before my husband so instead of sitting in the bedroom I’ll go down to the living space.

10. Have you attended a meditation retreat, can you share some of your experience and insights?
I’ve been to meditation retreats, yes, and I think they are an incredible way to experience community. A lot of what I find is that sometimes meditation and meditating can feel isolating, especially if it’s not a part of a religious practice. Sometimes it feels like we’re all doing it on our own. When you go to a retreat you begin to find a community that really nurtures and understands your experiences.

Also, there’s so much clarity that comes out of these retreats that they really can change your path forward or completely open you up to yourself in a new way.

11. Any favourite books/CDs/Resources that you might share with others?
There are so many books I could list but NonViolent Communication by Marshall B Rosenberg changed my life and The Art of Communicating by Thich Nhat Hanh is also a wonderful read.

If you’re interested in discovering your communication style and reading a free excerpt of How To Communicate Like a Buddhist you can CLICK HERE

12. Any wise words to share with those who are new to meditation?
I think we get this idea that sitting and focusing on our breath or body, or a mantra should be easy, but with all that we have going on in our minds it’s actually quite difficult to do. It’s a constant noticing and letting go and coming back to our focus. A state of remembering and forgetting. But if we keep to it, sticking with a practice, even if it’s five-ten minutes a day, it gets easier.

13. 7 Random things about you?
1) I wrote a hiking guide book to the Community of Madrid (Take a Hike: The Best 50 Routes in the Community of Madrid) and started a company that guides people out into the mountains on the weekends
2) I believe life it too short for matching socks
3) On Saturdays I go through a kind of cleansing ritual with music. I start with sad songs that make me cry, then build up to empowering songs, and finally feel good music. I believe it opens me up for the good stuff.
4) I have quotes hanging all around my desk. The one I’m looking at right now is my personal credo: Detach. Trust. Receive.
5) I collect salt & pepper shakers
6) Whenever I see a yellow car I remind myself that I’m alive right now and to be grateful for the moment I’m in
7) I used to eat so much yogurt that I gave myself an allergy to cows milk

Thank you Cynthia.

I met Jennifer at a Website Development Workshop!  Who would have thought .. you never expect to meet one of your community at these things!  I just happened to arrive a little late and took the seat next to Jennifer .. and then at morning tea break we had a chat .. something about the need for a good coffee and how the machine might work :)

After the workshop we stood on the cold Melbourne sidewalk and introduced ourselves properly ..  she was a yoga teacher, a Melbournian, a traveller and an AUTHOR!  I knew then and there, that I wanted to know more about Jennifer's book .. and asked her a few email's later to share her thoughts in our Focus On series.

Tell us about your Special Interest
Yoga and travel are my two main passions. My passion for yoga began while on holiday in Thailand many years ago, when I attended a workshop on establishing a ‘home practice’. I first started my ‘home’ practice many years ago on holiday in Morocco. I had read somewhere that it is better to practise for a short time each day than for an extended period once a week. So I decided that if I couldn’t practise yoga for 15 minutes each day when on holiday, when could I? I took up the challenge and have never stopped. Yoga has been my constant. It has allowed me to enjoy the freedom of travel and living away from home while staying centred and grounded.

Focus On: Clare Greig, Business & Creativity Coach

The Focus On series is all about sharing the diversity of meditation journeys and experiences. An opportunity to come together and share stories, practices and insights .. to listen and learn from each other.

I met Clare about five years ago when she was building an online marketing business in the wellness sector.  I was thrilled to write a series of meditation posts for her and her community .. and we have continued to keep in touch and share online journeys.

Clare has recently launched a beautiful new website and business, a significant achievement at the best of times .. especially powerful after successfully facing a major health 'curveball'.

When Clare mentioned that her meditation practice had been a vital 'tool' for her during this challenging time .. I had to invite her to share her journey with us.

Name: Clare Greig, Certified Business and Creativity Coach
Special Interest: Meditation

Tell us about your Special Interest
I am a creativity coach. Creativity is something I have always, although I didn’t always know it, been connected to. Meditation is one of the key tools I use to move myself and my clients into the creative part of my brain. My biggest ideas and clarity come only when my mind is quiet and free.

How long have you been practicing, or working in this area?
Since as long as I can remember I have always operated predominantly from my intuitive, feeling driven right brain so I understand how to dig deep into your own creative well of goodness. Which allows us to be innovative and original in our business. I started out 2 years ago as a business coach, however my clients kept telling me I helped them feel creative. So I ran with this niche.

How did you ‘find’ meditation, and how long have you been practicing meditation
I still remember that first meditation course I signed up for. I (literally) fell off my chair. Over a decade later and I realize that what I resisted (calm, presence, stillness) proved to be my greatest asset in creative-business life.  I wasn’t born knowing how to get big ideas on tap.  I’ve had to discover, experiment and refine things for myself and for my coaching clients.

Despite pushing myself through my career (and in competitive industries), I’ve time and again realised that whenever I slowed down and made meditation part of my daily life, I hit gold. Every. Single. Time.

And by ‘gold’ I mean the money-making-idea-gold. Not just a pretty metaphor.

So over many years working in business and then later for myself as a business coach, I’ve dedicated myself to finding simple ways to wind down.

Do you have a regular practice – daily, weekly, other?
I try to commit to meditating every day and sometimes it doesn’t work out, especially with two little kids. However since I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September last year I realised I needed meditation for so many reasons. To help me with the fear, worry and anxiety this life threatening illness could potentially bring. So I set my alarm away from the bed so I have to get up and commit to meditating every morning before my family wakes up.

What inspires you to keep meditating .. returning to your practice?
The results. It brings me so much peace, positivity and creativity. I’m at the stage now where if I miss for a few days I really feel it. My head get’s busy. Which means clarity falls away.

Why meditate?
I just love taking the time just for me to relax under a blanket and go within. It’s about self care. Making myself a priority. Because I know when I do that, everyone in my life benefits.

Do you have a particular technique(s) that you have found most suitable for you?
I really enjoy meditating through my chakras. I love focusing on the breath at different points in my body. I find I intuitively know when I need to move on to the next chakra. I love guided meditations but I also love the freedom of simply meditating without any assistance. I still do have many moments when it is frustrating and I can’t sit still. Which often means I need to go for a walk before, sing with my Tibetan singing bowl or do some yoga. Then try again.

AM or PM?
Morning works best for me because I know the house will be quiet. I like to sit upright on a chair with a blanket.

Have you a dedicated space for your practice?
I move around to different places in my house. My favourite place is out on our deck which sits overlooking a massive beautiful Eucalypt tree.

Have you attended a meditation retreat?
No but I would love to. Maybe even one where you aren’t allowed to speak to anyone for a few days.

Any favourite books/CDs/Resources that you might share with others?
I love Sara Brooke’s “Activiate your inner healer” CD. I also love having a tibetan singing bowl as it really helps to quickly shift my energy to a more relaxed state.

Any thoughts you might share with those who are new to meditation?
I would try and take an “in person course”, really just to be accountable to a teacher and a group. The shared experience of meditation is beautiful. Guided meditations are fantastic for beginners.

7 Random things about you?
1. I studied music and psychology - the perfect combo for a creativity coach.
2. I play jazz flute.
3. I grew up in the English countryside and now I live in the Australian bush.
4. My husband and I married on a beautiful beach in Thailand.
5. A breast cancer diagnosis and 8 months of treatment taught me what gratitude and presence really means.
6. My first ever job was selling grand pianos in a beautiful music shop in Bond st.
7. I have two beautiful kids who are my whole world.

Thank you Clare :)

Focus On : Jocasta from Chill Out Chairs

The 'Focus On' articles are designed to share individual journeys in meditation, providing a unique opportunity to listen and learn from each other.

I met Jocasta through B-School and caught up with her, and her gorgeous meditation chairs (actually, they are chairs for absolutely any occasion .. but ideal for meditation) at this years Wanderlust Festival.

Not only super gorgeous looking and cosy, these chairs are a huge improvement on our little fat meditation cushions that sit on the floor.

Amazingly, despite the busyness of life, a young family, B-School, festivals and building her new business .. I am delighted that Jocasta agreed to share some insight into her meditation practice.

Focus On: Jenni from Ihana Yoga

One of the delights for 2013 .. was meeting Jenni Morrison-Jack from Ihana Yoga.

I had watched with interest the opening of a new yoga space in my local neighbourhood .. and I felt drawn to introduce myself.  It has been an absolute joy to share meditation at the studio .. and we will be back again in 2014.

The 'Focus On' articles are designed to share individual journeys in meditation, an opportunity to listen and learn from others.

Name: Jenni Morrison-Jack, Founder of Ihana Yoga
Special Interest: Yoga
Email: jenni@ihanayoga.com.au
Website: www.ihanayoga.com.au

Tell us about Ihana Yoga:

We are committed to providing high-quality yoga teaching based on solid anatomical understanding. At Ihana Yoga you will learn safe alignments and healthy movement patterns in physical yoga practice.
Through the philosophy and practices of yoga we aim to inspire, motivate and empower you to live the healthy lifestyle you dream of. Our mission to raise consciousness is based on the core philosophy of yoga; Union or Oneness with all of life".
Tell us about your Special Interest
My special interest is Yoga in the full meaning of the word; psycho-spiritual tradition. All yoga traditions tell us that there is something beyond the body-mind complex, which has always intrigued me. Living in this fast paced modern society, we need this age-old tradition more than ever. Yoga helps us heal the body-mind, and then fine-tune it in order to lead a more conscious life.

How long have you been practicing, or working in this area?
I started my asana (postural yoga) practice 14 years ago, but I feel like I’ve done yoga all my life. I was a rhythmic gymnast all my childhood, so an individual physical practice that requires concentration has always been in my life. More importantly, I’ve always been drawn to the yogic way of thinking; at around the age of 10 when I had read all the kids books at our local library, I started going through all the spiritual books the library had to offer – from Eastern tradition of reincarnation and soul travel to astrology, angels, and out-of-body experiences.

How did you ‘find’ meditation, and how long have you been practicing meditation
I’ve always needed alone-time, and even as a young child I used to sit on the window ledge by myself staring at the sky, doing nothing. Formal meditation didn’t come til much later when I attended a couple of Reiki courses in 2005. The love for my inner experience grew and I was introduced to different types of meditation on my travels. I attended a couple of 10-day silent Vipassana meditation retreats in India and the Himalayas of Nepal, which gave me a good kick-start to meditation in 2007 and 2008.

Do you have a regular practice – daily, weekly, other?
Yes. I wouldn’t go a week without meditating, but I still go through stages of more or less meditation. Longer periods of daily meditation always show that I am happier and my life feels more purposeful when I meditate every single day.

What inspires you to keep meditating .. returning to your practice?
At first the benefits of meditation weren’t clear to me. I felt good, but I couldn’t pinpoint it to meditation only. The more regular my practice became, and the more I got used to feeling good, grateful and happy, the more I started noticing the lack of meditation as a lack of what my family calls the ‘happy-life syndrome’.

Why meditate?
It allows me to tap into the unlimited source of universal energy. After sitting for 30min in a strong energy flow, I feel completely re-energised and recharged. No matter what the form of my meditation is on any given day, my intention is to raise the level of consciousness to remember our origin as well as understand our true nature.

Do you have a particular technique(s) that you have found most suitable for you?
After the Vipassana meditation retreats I’ve attended, it still is easy to go back to a body scanning technique that emphasises equanimity towards all sensations, whether pleasant or unpleasant. On some days, I feel I need to keep my awareness in the physical body and observe bodily sensations to stay grounded, whereas on other days I enjoy scanning the energy body around and inside the physical body, which feels like a more healing and clearing meditation.

AM or PM?
AM ideally as it sets the intention for the rest of the day. However, if I miss a morning when I teach at 6am, I enjoy sitting before lunch. My preferred meditative position is sitting on the floor cross-legged on a beautiful meditation cushion that a dear friend has given me.

Have you a dedicated space for your practice?
My favourite place to meditate is at our yoga studio, where we have created a strong energy grid with selenite, rose quartz and clear quartz. Otherwise, I sit at home in any empty room.

Have you attended a meditation retreat?
Yes. Two 10-day Vipassana meditation retreats.

Any favourite books/CDs/Resources that you might share with others?
As simple as it sounds, my favourite meditation resource is the Internet. There is so much info online, including guided meditations.

Any thoughts you might share with those who are new to meditation?
Don’t set yourself unrealistic goals, like meditating 1h twice a day. Meditation seems more accessible when you start with little 2-5min meditations.

7 Random things about you?

* I baby talk to all random dogs coming my way.
* My fingernails and toenails are matching colour 95% of the time.
* I have a Master’s degree in Finance and even worked in the corporate world for a while.
*
I don’t like watching the news, but love getting hooked on TV series and watching episodes back to back without commercials.

* I love studying and learning new things.
* I’m proud to be a book worm and a geek!

* I have designed our mosaic table after my favourite constellation, Orion’s Belt.

Thank you Jenni :)

Focus On : Clare from my spa guide

Recently I met the amazing Clare Greig .. one of the owners/ creators of my spa guide, the ultimate independent directory of Australian spas. This is a brilliant website (and what a business to work in!) my spa guide provides spa seekers with a spa search tool, a place to write reviews, find spa deals, treatment guides and spa news.

Clare and I spoke about meditation, blogging and setting up a new business .. and I am thrilled that she was more than happy to be interviewed for this Focus On post.  I am also delighted to let you know that Clare invited me to write some guest posts for my spa guide .. which you can check out now on their website at http://www.myspaguide.com.au/ .. now over to Clare ...

Name: Clare Greig
Special Interest: Heath and Wellbeing
Email: clare@myspaguide.com.au
Website : www.myspaguide.com.au

Tell us about your thoughts on wellness

It is so easy to get caught up in our busy lives and miss the moments. Creating a lifestyle where we are truly ourselves and inspired by our surroundings and lifes natural gifts of nature, connecting with others, love and spirituality. I find this through music, taking time out, meditation, sleep, visiting day spas, exersise and laughter. With a good mix of the above ingredients we can be healthy, well and loving to others.

How long have you been practicing, or working in this area?
I have been working in magazine and website publishing for 10 years and decided I wanted to work for myself so that I could get a good balance of being a Mother and make my own rules. So my spa guide was the perfect opportunity to allow me to use my experience and create every Spa Seekers dream, a one-stop-shop, with a comprehensive guide to Australian spas, great articles and an easy-to-use spa search tool.

How did you ‘find’ meditation, and how long have you been practicing meditation?
Meditation did not come easy to me. When I first tried it the thought of sitting still for twenty minutes made me panic. I started with a 2 hour class across 10 weeks. Now after a few years of practice it is easy and effortless. I am probably the kind of person who needs it the most. I have a busy mind and a hectic lifestyle, I struggle to relax and I always want to achieve more. This means my body and mind never get to rest and recharge, aside from when I am sleeping. So meditation has taught me to slow down, rest and become still.

Do you have a regular practice – daily, weekly, other?  Ideally I practice daily but I get in and out of the habit. I meditated today!

What inspires you to keep meditating .. returning to your practice? After meditation I have more clarity, I laugh more, I’m more patient and forgiving.

Why meditate? A more light hearted and easy going me as a result. Since becoming a mother meditation has become even more important. It is harder to find the time but the need to reset my energy and be in the moment with my boy is vital!

Do you have a particular technique(s) that you have found most suitable for you?
Most of the time I need guided meditation at first but once I have softened I can enjoy silent meditation. I find my mind wanders and I have different techniques to bring it back eg. the breath and focussing on specific words like “calm” or “love”. I also like following light to areas I am feeling stressed and tense.

AM or PM? Luncthime when my little boy is sleeping

Chair, cushion, stool? I like a cushion on the floor.

Have you a dedicated space for your practice? Not really. In an ideal world I would meditate under a tree, could there be a better spot?

Have you attended a meditation retreat? No. Would like to try a health retreat that offers massage, meditation and hiking. Heaven!

Any favourite books/CDs/Resources that you might share with others? Yolanda Pettinato’s CD’s are great.

Any thoughts you might share with those who are new to meditation? Don’t have any expectations. There is always time to meditate, no matter how busy we are.

7 Random things about you?
I’m just shy of 6ft tall
Melbourne is my wonderful adopted City, England is my beautiful home
I prefer to play guitar than watch TV
I used to run a choir, singing with others is amazingly good for your welbeing
I grew up in the countryside and I want to return before I’m forty
Life doesn’t get much better than losing track of time at the beach
I had a baby Elephant at my wedding

Focus On : Jacqui from EmPowerMe Interventions

It is truly wonderful to meet a member of 'the tribe' .. someone looking in the same direction, walking a similar path, sharing wisdoms and experiences, helping others to be the best they can be. A girlfriend suggested that I meet up with Jacqui and check out her EmPowerMe Interventions clinic which has a number of treatment rooms and lovely upstairs workshop space in Black Rock. Jacqui is committed and passionate in helping others find the best way to support and honour their mind body spirit. When I found out that Jacqui is also a meditator, I knew I had to ask her to share a little of her meditation journey with us ... thank you Jacqui and please check out EmPowerMe Interventions.

Meet : Jacqui Christie whose special interest is 'empowering people'
Email: empowerme58@gmail.com
Website : www.empower-me.com.au

EmPowerMe Interventions is a clinic that offers psychological and complementary therapies. It is a place that individuals, families and children can come to be taken care of in a wholistic way tending to your mind body and spirit. We offer reiki, hypnotherapy for weight loss smoking, naturopathy, homeopathy, traditional chinese medicine, life coaching, psychotherapy, psycho-legal information and support, counselling and assessment. All of our practitioners and psychologists are highly trained and skilled in their particular fields and all have their own specializations.

Tell us about your special interest : My main interest is and always has been people. People and how they behave are fascinating to me in that we are so complex and multi layered. An interest that is dear to my heart is empowering people to do whatever it is they want to do, or feel they need to do in their life. I do this through a variety of different methods. For many years I have worked in the field of family violence assisting men and women to live fear free lives. Initially I worked with men individually and in facilitating groups around their behaviour change and assisting them to understand about the man they want to become. I then moved into working with women around assertiveness whilst also enabling them to begin to live the life they want to live. One of the areas I tend to focus on with people is how to be free from fear.

How long have you been practicing, or working in this area? Approximately 15 years

How did you ‘find’ meditation, and how long have you been practicing meditation? I found meditation at a time when I needed it desperately. In fact it was my teenage son who encouraged me to join a guided meditation group. I have to admit I was highly resistant to this idea partly because of my profession ( not scientific enough!!! ) and I believed I did not need anything like meditation I mean what was it anyway ...... and how would it help me. Ye of little faith I hear you say........ so glad my son was sooooo insistent....... yes that’s right I went along and met some beautiful women who were running the group and that was the beginning.... I have to say it took me a while to go, and then to go back......again and again.... I needed a bit of a rework I think, physically as well as mentally which is of course is what happened........

After many meditations including bizarre experiences, releasing pain during and after meditation with energy balance massages (wonderful thing they are too). I think I was fairly well reworked and re-energized and well and truly “into” meditation.. Our little group has long since disbanded but I am eternally grateful to Mary and Angela the two women who ran the group for introducing me to meditation and its healing powers as well as introducing me back to my heritage that there are many different paths to healing.

Do you have a regular practice? My practice is regular of what I would call mini meditations and it is every evening before sleep

Why meditate? I meditate to calm my mind calm my body and reconnect the two.

Do you have a particular technique(s) that you have found most suitable for you? The most suitable technique for me as well as the simplest is to use diaphragmatic breathing combined with a mantra I have used for a few years now to” invoke the light”

AM or PM? .. Chair, cushion, stool? Generally every evening lying down before sleep however lately it has been whenever I feel the need to meditate which has been am and pm and in the middle too.

Have you attended a meditation retreat? Yes I have attended a weekend womens retreat at Brahma Kumaris in Baxter.

Any favourite books/CDs/Resources that you might share with others? One of my all time favourite books is “The little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exuperys. This book was suggested to me when i was in my 20’s.... dont be fooled by its title or appearance as I was and nearly didnt read it.... It is an amazing, moving and beautiful experience to read. A fantastic CD and resource is Meditation with Angels by Martine Salerno. No 4 the violet flame was an inspiration and incredibly healing meditation for me when I was in dire need of something more powerful and spiritual than what was around me at the time.

Any thoughts you might share with those who are new to meditation? I would say to anyone who is new to meditation..... if after you have tried meditation and you believed “it didnt work” try, try, try again. .. as with everything worthwhile it takes time and practice. Remember there is no perfect way to meditate only your way to meditate. Oh yes dont worry if aches and pains seem to come out of knowhere.....this is the body attempting to release some of the emotional content that you have been carrying and you need to release it

Something random about you? Hmmm random let me think i like spiders and bugs and all things nature.....

Focus On : Lisa, Founder of STUDOM3

A few months ago I realised life had become much too sedentary. Working at the computer all day and sitting in meditation classes all week was leaving me a little stagnant (mind and body). I also knew that I wanted to commit to a practice that would 'nourish' me, not just move me .. something that might reconnect me with a deeper 'body awareness'.

I spoke my intention into the world and surprise, surprise .. I found Lisa and her local studio. I knew a little about Yin Yoga but had never found a practitioner in Australia. So I signed up .. and now feel totally blessed!

I am in awe of Lisa, her wisdom, knowledge and commitment to body+mind practices .. she has established a beautiful space and is an inspiration as a practitioner and teacher of yoga (Yin, Vinyasa, Yogalates, Pre/Post Natal, Teen and Kids) and also pole dance (beginners to world class competition level). She offers a huge schedule of classes, workshops and private instruction and graciously shared some time to be interviewed! I am delighted to be able to share our discussion with you ... learn more at www.studom3.com.au

Focus On : Jenny Moore, Natural Lifestyle Company

You may have read about my beloved meditation timer .. the one that sat beside me for many years of meditation practice then mysteriously stopped chiming for me .. and my recent discovery that the beautiful Zen Meditation Timer(s) are now being sold in Australia .. by the Natural Lifestyle Company.

Jenny is a Director of the Natural Lifestyle Company who specialize in importing and supplying a range of high quality products, designed to 'enhance lifestyle and promote a more healthy and eco friendly environment'. And one of their key products is the amazing Zen Timer range. I met Jenny at the Conference .. and recently asked her if she would share with us her journey with meditation .. thank you so much Jenny .. very inspiring!
Tell us about meditation in your life
Mindfulness Meditation and products and techniques to help incorporate meditation into every day life.
How long have you been practicing, or working in this area?
I have been practicing meditation inconsistently for over 20 years. Over the last 2 years my practice has been much more regular and rewarding and yet funnily enough, much less structured. I have been working in and around meditation and lifestyle choices for over 10 years.
How did you ‘find’ meditation, and how long have you been practicing meditation?
In the late 90’s, after working at a major retail head office for over 10 years, I took a leap of faith and took on the role as Marketing Manager for a new concept store – The Lifestyle Shop. This is where I first met an array of interesting, like minded people and was exposed to products and books that inspired me to start a journey on a different path in life. I have been practicing mediation since those early days, dropping out for a year here or there but now as one of the Directors of the Natural Lifestyle Company – working in the industry again has reminded me how important daily practice is.
Do you have a regular practice – daily, weekly, other?I feel very fortunate in that I have finally cross a threshold where I feel that I meditate almost daily. I try to incorporate mindfulness meditations into everyday activities like doing dishes and walking the dog and this becomes my regular meditation practice.
What inspires you to keep meditating? Returning to your practice?
I attend a fortnightly meditation group in Elwood and visit an Ashram in Daylesford every three months or so to keep me inspired and energetic. I read as many different theories and thoughts on lifestyle and meditation as I can as I love to constantly challenge my beliefs and be inspired by different ideas. My mindfulness bell goes off every hour or so to remind me to take a second and breath, reflect or simply have a mental break.

Why meditate?
As a single parent, Director of 2 companies, and a working mum, I am constantly time challenged. Mindfulness meditation helps remind me of the importance of the things we take for granted. Meditation allows space and time for my thoughts to take a break – or for me to simply day dream if that’s what I choose at that moment. Meditation time is my time. It’s just me in there and I can choose how that is going to be.

At a mediation conference recently a speaker reminded us that it’s not what happens in the hour or so we meditate that’s important – it’s the benefit over the next 23 hours that is truly the experience. I love this idea as it takes away the pressure of a perfect practice.
Do you have a particular technique(s) that you have found most suitable for you?I do. I like to spend time in the mornings while walking our dog opening up to acceptance and giving gratitude for another day and all that happens in it. “And So It Is” is my mantra. I find in this way the day unfolds exactly as it should. During the day, my mindfulness bell gives me a reminder to spend some time in contemplation. Check in with Me. How am I doing? Are we ok? Then of an evening I spend ½ hour or so before bed just being. No pressure, no expectations.
Have you a dedicated space for your practice? In my life, my home and my work I make space internally rather than physically to practice meditation. I do always light a candle as a focus point though. I try to meditate with my eyes open or invariably I fall asleep and miss the whole thing.

Have you attended a meditation retreat?
I have been to The Santayana Ashram at Rockland in Daylesford and The Ian Gawler Foundation, and once as a special treat to Gaia Retreat and Spa in Byron Bay. All of these places are great as a reminder and inspiration point.
Any favorite books/CDs/Resources that you might share with others? My meditation practice has taken a turn since using and selling the beautiful Zen Timepiece. I set it to go off during the day as a reminder to be mindful and also when I am in meditation as a gentle way to bring myself out of the experience gracefully. I also use the clock to wake up which puts me in the right frame of mind immediately to start a day of mindfulness.

Any thoughts you might share with those who are new to meditation?
At my meditation course recently we talked about The Permission Technique which I find very liberating. It is basically going easy on yourself when meditating, not expecting anything and being kind to your thoughts. For people new to meditation this is a lovely gentle technique that eliminates the pressure of performance anxiety in a meditation practice.
7 Random things about you?I love being a parent and truly believe the earlier we teach our kids about mindfulness the better.
I took my 7 year old back packing around Europe a few years ago on my own for 8 weeks. It was the best time of my life.
I am so glad I remembered about the Zen Clock Range 10 years after I was introduced to them – It has changed my working and personal life.
Relationships are the core of my life.
I have a dog for the first time in my life and now understand why everyone says they are mans best friend.
The smell of Daphne flowers in winter is the best smell in the world to me.
Putting on my gumboots and lighting a fire at our caravan in Daylesford automatically transports me from the stress of everyday life in the city to a place of peace and gratitude. It is my favorite place to practice mindfulness.

(Please take a look at the Natural Lifestyle Company and give Jenny a call if you have any questions regarding the Zen Timer(s)).

Focus On : Jennifer Berridge 'The Karma Studio'

This winter I found a new home for the Exploring Meditation program (a cosy and inviting home) at The Karma Studio in Sandringham. A very welcoming space that offers an opportunity to leave the noisy, busy world outside .. and step into quiet calmness.

Jennifer Berridge is the founder of The Karma Studio and she has been working and studying in the natural health and therapy field for over 25 years. Jennifer has Diplomas in Swedish, Remedial, Polarity, Reflexology and Chinese Massage, has 15years experience in Yoga Therapy, runs yoga retreats, is a mother .. and recently became a Japanese Needle Therapy practitioner! Wow! A wealth of knowledge, positive energy and peacefulness. I asked Jennifer some probing questions to find out more ..

Tell us about what you do :
I am the owner of The Karma Studio and support people with their health and wellness through Japanese Needle Therapy, Energy Massages and Yoga Programs.

So what is Japanese Needling Therapy? Japanese Needling Therapy originated in Japan over 1400 years ago. Because of stress, lifestyle and a lack of right nutrition etc. We become grossly out of balance, weak and unable to heal ourselves. Needling Therapy aims to balance the Yin & Yang and Five Phase Systems realigning the Biorhythmic system. Tools used include needling, cupping, moxibustion, colour and sound therapy, Sotai, Polarity Therapy and other modalities to suite the individual. The therapy leaves you energized strengthened and balanced so that your own body can come back to its roots. It is very powerful!

How long have you been practicing in the wellbeing and health field? How did you start?I have been practising for 29 years now .. but only the last nine years have I been running The Karma Studio in this area (Sandringham).

How did you 'find' meditation, and how long have you been practicing?I have practiced meditation every day for ten years .. before that it was on and off.

Do you have a regular practice?Yes daily meditation and yoga. I also have chanting classes weekly and massages bi-weekly.

What inspires you to keep meditation and returning to your practice?
Meditation is the single thing that clears, focuses, nourishes and empowers me .. nothing else has ever come close to fulfilling me like my meditation practice.

Can I ask .. why do you meditate?
To love and nourish myself.

Do you have a particular technique(s) that you have found most suitable for you?It varies, between chakra cleansing and different breath techniques and chanting.

AM or PM .. Chair, cushion or stool?
Mornings with a cushion or stool.

Have you a dedicated space for your practice?
Yes .. in my Sun Room at The Karma Studio (Sarah : ahh that is why the room is so calming and has such a beautiful energy ..lots of meditation happening in that room!)

Have you attended a meditation retreat?Yes many.

Any favourite books/CDs/Resources that you might share with others?
I promote relaxation and meditation CD's .. there are so many where do I start? (Sarah : there is a space at The Karma Studio where you can find a great assortment of books, CDs, yoga props, candles .. )

Any thoughts you might share with those who are new to meditation?Start with five minutes and build up. Never do too long as you won’t make it a discipline if you don’t keep up with everyday.

7 Random things about you?I love .. Nature, People, Peace, fun and stillness, the theatre, walking, yoga and, connecting with people and travel.

If you are in the Bayside area please drop into The Karma Studio or have a look at their website .. and talk with Jennifer about how she can assist with your wellness.

Focus On : Deanne Brennan

Meet Deanne Breannan .. a passionate Health & Wellness Coach well known for her enthusiasm, compassion and simple wisdoms! Deanne is a whirlwind of energy .. and mostly it is focussed on assisting others to shift their mind-set and produce real results in life.

After travelling the world Deanne now lives in Melbourne and is conducting the wonderful Goal Setting Workshop next Wednesday 31st March (see below .. and where I shall be participating with a practical intro to meditation). Last week I caught up with Dee .. at one of her favourite café’s .. and asked her some questions …

Tell us about what you do : I coach people to set realistic goals to improve their overall health and wellness. Some people already know what they need to do to start looking after themselves but don’t make the time to plan it successfully. Some people just don’t know where to start, and that’s ok too, a bit of encouragement and support from a great coach can make all the difference to how we feel about ourselves.

How long have you been practicing? How did you start? Honestly, since I was 15yrs old! I was always encouraging friends to get off the couch or meet them for a walk. About 7yrs ago I studied Health Science – Soft Tissue Therapy (Remedial Massage). I often focused on my client’s lifestyle habits and looked at ways they could make some positive changes. I now have professional coaching qualifications and try new things every week related to health and wellness. So when I’m kicking back at a health retreat or enjoying some meditation I’m not only doing it for me…I’m doing it for my clients. A great coach walks their own talk. I love my job!

What sorts of things do your clients need help with? Often it’s getting them back on track with their health when work and stress gets in the way. Sometimes clients just want to start feeling better about themselves but just don’t have the motivation to get started.

How do you stay in balance with your Health and Wellness? I set new fitness goals every 2 months and often evaluate along the way. I get a massage every Monday, spend lots of time with friends and I take time out for myself everyday.

Do you have a special practice or ritual? My daily practice/ritual happens just after my morning exercise. I go and settle into a café and indulge in a skinny cappuccino, it’s my ‘me time’.

You also practice Meditation .. what technique(s) have you found most suitable for you? I do find that I focus best with short guided meditations no longer than 20mins. I recently down loaded a guided meditation on my ‘i phone’. I implement new meditations every fortnight otherwise I start to get distracted. New types of meditations keep me interested and alert.

AM or PM? .. Chair, cushion, stool? Late afternoon is best if I have been busy running around. It calms me and I tend to be much more productive afterwards. I usually lay down.

Have you a dedicated space for your practice? No, but it does sound like a fantastic idea!

Is Health and Wellness Coaching your main focus or do you work in other areas? I am also a massage therapist and get to travel the world with elite sporting teams such as professional cycling and triathlon. It’s a fun way to see new countries and meet some amazing people.

Any favourite books/CDs/Resources that you might share with others? “You Can Do It” – Paul Hanna. Really easy to read and just the motivation you need to get you going again.

What words of advice would you provide to those who are looking for a Coach to help them with their Health and Wellness? A great coach should be someone you feel you can trust and be completely honest with. All coaches will have their own coaching style, you may like to try 2 different coaches before you commit to a longer term arrangement.

7 Random things about you?I love to run!
I have breakfast every Tuesday with my girlfriends and we chat about our goals, it’s so much fun!
I find one new coffee shop a week
I believe that ‘Only good things happen to me’ and I often remind myself
I am a big fan of romantic comedies
I am great at visualising my dreams and turning them into reality!
I enjoy having deep conversations with random strangers.
