Mindfulness Meditation : Meditate09

Photo Under the Tree at The Mansion Hotel, Werribee Park by Quiet Mind

Praise and blame, gain and loss, pleasure and sorrow come and go like the wind.
To be happy, rest like a giant tree in the midst of them all. -Buddha

Meditate09 : Timothea Goddard from Openground introduced participants to Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction through her presentation ‘Emotions in Meditation and in Life’ and also gave us this lovely quote (above) from Buddha, which speaks about how life is often ill-balanced .. although Timothea’s words were ‘life sucks and sings’ which drew much agreement and laughter from the audience.

Some of us are naturally optimists (that’s so me) and others quite obviously lean towards pessimism (hmm I can nominate a few people here) .. but it is the realist that sees the world as just ‘the world’ .. neither sucking nor singing .. but abounding with untold flavours.

The Buddha reflected that a state of balance and wholeness is in fact our natural state .. and if we can learn to connect to this core of serenity no matter what is going on around us .. then this small shift in thinking can give us deep peace throughout our daily lives.

Mindfulness Meditation is as an intentional, non judgemental focused awareness in the present moment. Mindfulness is about making what you are doing now the most important thing in the world, interrupting the ‘automatic pilot’ and inviting a sense of intense curiosity for the subtle flavour of every experience as it arises .. without trying to change anything.

To many people it is often a profound ‘ah ha’ realisation : that our emotions are impermanent .. and don’t define us.

Mindfulness training can assist in seeing and understanding the automatic habitual ways that we often react, see situations more clearly, develop mental and emotional resilience and find stability in the face of complex life situations.

Timothea also referenced:

Jon Kabat-Zinn who established the
Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts and author of numerous scientific papers on the clinical applications of mindfulness in medicine and health care, and several books including Full Catastrophe Living : Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain and Illness (1991), Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life (1994).

Dan Siegel ‘The Mindful Brain’ (2007) who describes mindful as being ‘aware, of being conscientious, with kindness and care’. And whose book reviews the scientific evidence that meditation and the mindful state not only produce improvement in well-being, but also detectable physical changes in the brain, such as a thickening of the middle prefrontal lobes.

Always new beginnings ...

I am back! I know it’s been a while since l delved into my lovely blog .. but it’s not for want of trying .. just life took off for a while in another direction .. and today I am almost free of those distractions .. and hence found some precious evening hours to ponder the whirlwind of life these past weeks.

I mentioned in a previous entry .. how life sometimes throws you a curve ball? .. well one day a few weeks back I found the me that was the ‘corporate~big office~big desk~multi tasking~suit’ was no longer. Instead a new image presented itself : 'newly~retrenched' .. that's quite a big turnaround .. a rather weighty bump in the road!

To be honest though .. it wasn’t too surprising .. the gec (global economic crisis) has crossed the path of many around me .. in my ‘old’ job in recruitment I was hearing the tale constantly from others .. now I had joined the club.

In a really funny, mixed up, but heartbump way however, I noted a naughty kind of excited in the change of the map. We all have dreams residing deep within us .. and often the normality of life sit atop those dreams so they continue to reside unheard. Unexpected bumps in the road of life can sometimes be the magic ‘bump’ that throws us in a new direction, maybe closer in geography to the dream?

From this point .. there is a lot to tell .. but it will take too long tonight . .which is after all a wee night of celebration! So for the story on what happened from retrenchment to now .. that will have to wait for an entry next week. For now .. I must share with you that tonight I am celebrating … first, I have toasted tonight the completion of eight weeks as “the student” .. one part of my new journey has been completing a Small Business Management course (which was brilliant, fun, inspiring and challenging), and secondly I am celebrating ….. My new logo ...
This has been a really exciting journey! I went to
99Designs to help me find a new logo (a worldwide design competition site .. check it out, highly recommended) and after a huge response and much inspiration and energy from graphic designers across the globe .. I have just awarded the prize to Try for this beautiful design which I simply couldn't get out of my mind from the moment I saw it .. To view some Try's folio you can go to http://99designs.com/users/305062 . Thank you Try very much.

More tomorrow … and much to share in upcoming entries. Thank you to all my friends, family and blog~mates who have asked me how things have been going .. and where have you been? .. I am so grateful for everyones support and encouragement.

A busy week ahead with lots of news and blogs to make happen. Next weekend is the
Meditate09 Conference and I can’t wait .. a whole weekend talking and listening and delving into all that is meditation. If you are not in Melbourne .. stay tuned as I will report back on all the amazing speakers, workshops hosts, people I meet and information I gather .. Stay safe and happy ..

Meditate09 .. a must do!

Got plans for the weekend of 20th and 21st June?

I cannot recommend more highly making sure you get to the MEDITATE 09 conference if you have an interest in the wonderful practice of meditation. This is the 2nd annual Australian Meditation Conference and the theme this year is Meditation and the Mind .. exploring how meditation promotes physical wellbeing and emotional literacy and can be used in the prevention and treatment of stress, anxiety and depression.

Last years event was simply fantastic with great speakers, excellent workshops, meet and greets, inspiring music and amazing energy allround! .. I am so excited that I get to spend a whole weekend indulging myself in all that is meditation .. a whole weekend away from 'daily life' where I can just sit and listen to amazing and inspiring meditation speakers ..
Paul Wilson (author of The Quiet), Dr Chris Walsh (Meditation and Psychotherapy) and Petrea King (Quest for Life Foundation). I attended a wonderful retreat with Paul Wilson a few years ago .. really enjoyed his energy and meditation instruction .. a fun weekend with a great group of people!

Please visit the website for more information ..
Meditate09 .. check out the conference program on Saturday and excellent workshops on Sunday. A great event for Melbourne which should be embraced by anyone interested in meditation. See you there?
