The wind .. of the mind

We started our June Winter Meditation sessions this week .. a chance to reconnect with your meditation practice supported by a group of other meditators.  I led the first guided meditation which assisted in transitioning from the busy day to a quieter space, and then we did a twenty minute silent meditation.

It was a blustery, noisey and cold Wednesday night and in the deep stillness of our silent practice there was a sense at one point of almost 'being' the wild wind outside.

And the windy night provided me with a great lesson that I wanted to share..

When we come to our meditation practice we are often seeking that 'blissful, easy meditation' that perhaps we experienced last week or last class.  And sometimes when we finally sit for our meditation, we find that our body and mind do settle gently and easily .. like a soft summer breeze!  Othertimes our body and mind refuse to settle and throw us into a veritable gale of agitation and chaos.

With practice we realise that we must accept that we cannot 'make' the wind soften .. and we cannot 'make' meditation happen. We learn to let go of the need to control and make happen, instead we just open to the experience we are having in this moment.

We find that we can bear witness to the wild wind (the wild mind, the thoughts, stories, feelings or distractions) without being blown away or dismantled by it .. we just continue to breath with open non-judgemental awareness to what is.
